Erik ten Hag might need to get creative with his Man Utd squad selections amid an ongoing shortage of right wing options
Manchester United have spent £205 million on right wingers in the last three years. This weekend they might struggle to fill the position when they take on Brighton.
The most exciting might well be the most unlikely. Facundo Pellistri is one of the four right wingers signed in recent years, but has only started one competitive match during that time. The only match he started was essentially a dead-rubber against Real Betis when United were all but assured of progressing to the next round of the Europa League and facing Brighton at home would certainly be a much tougher ask.
It makes some sense playing either Fernandes or Mason Mount on the right in matches against elite opponents when a midfield rethink is also required, but at home to most teams there will be an onus on United to attack instead. It is on the wing where Mount could be at his best in a United shirt given his workrate and ability to win back the ball, so there could be a temptation to play him there this weekend if fit, in order to have him better prepared for the trip to Germany.
