In a summer where Man United needed to get their act together with sales, they are still failing to shift their most sellable assets.
In this warped world of the transfer market, if Manchester United want to obtain a fee for Brandon Williams they will have to extend his contract.
But United cut their losses on Alex Telles, one Saudi Arabia-based footballer whose fee was frugal, and academy talents only fetched six-figure fees. United's stall on the sellers' market still struggles to attract buyers. Most glaring is who is still at United. Their most sellable assets remain in the squad; two were unused substitutes at Tottenham last week while another was back in Manchester.
That was a compromise on the £50m United initially valued Maguire at. He has lost his place, he has lost the captaincy, he has lost the confidence of the manager and the supporters. There is a major international tournament in 10 months' time. Maguire should not be a hard sell. It would be mystifying that Maguire was still at United if their track record for outgoings was not so dismal. Daniel James is among their most expensive sales, joint fifth with David Beckham - flogged to Real Madrid for a cut-price £25m in 2003.
Forest seemed certain to take Dean Henderson off United's hands yet he too remains marooned at the club he joined 12 years ago. The thigh injury Henderson sustained in January, as well as the surgery he had in May, have made Forest tentative about negotiating a cash transaction. Crystal Palace have now touched base.
Henderson is 26, a United academy product, Premier League-proven and an England international. He is eminently sellable. The only kicking he is doing at United are his heels.
