Man United's start to the season has been disappointing and next summer's transfer plans are already shaping up.
Erik ten Hag wanted to sign Frenkie de Jong last summer and Casemiro was eventually brought in from Real Madrid instead. The relentless pursuit of De Jong showing no sign of coming to an end, combined with the Brentford debacle, forced Ten Hag to change his transfer plans and Casemiro has an entirely different profile to the Barcelona technician.
United have played 11 games this season and the October international break has been reached. There's been enough football played to draw conclusions and Casemiro hasn't fared well in the opening matches of the campaign. Casemiro was brought off at half-time and replaced by Christian Eriksen against Brentford and Ten Hag explained that decision by saying: "I wanted more football. One who brings passing, distribution, link-up play."
That was always a possibility when signing Casemiro. He wasn't brought to the club to be a long-term starter and it's always said that Real Madrid and their shrewd president Florentino Perez know exactly when to sell players. Varane's injury was described as a 'minor issue' and he's expected to be available after the international break, however, his injury record shows another younger, quality centre-back is needed, especially with Harry Maguire's future uncertain.
