It's a crisp recent Tuesday evening and a group of scouts from Killarney Heights is tramping happily along a trail deep within Manly Dam state park, their torches and chatter giving ample warning to any wildlife to scamper.

"It's a Gondwanaland relic that climbs waterfalls as part of its life cycle, takes in oxygen through its skin and survives in both fresh and marine waters," says Sonya Ku, the ecologist and our guide this night.For Nathan Lo, a Sydney University professor, the multiple sightings of the galaxias brevipinnis stir both personal and scientific responses.

Shaped almost like leaves, the climbing galaxias fish have survived against the odds in the Manly Dam creeks. The galaxias line goes back at least 60 million years."Developers can keep going back [for planning approval] until they get the decision they want, communities can't," Mr Fisher says.
