Machado's second homer breaks 2-2 tie in bottom of the eighth inning; Robert Suarez records final five outs as Padres remain four games out of playoff spot
Manny Machado on Friday night made it so they kept winning and were still impossible to dismiss as a playoff contender, as his second home run of the night lifted the Padres to their eighth consecutive victory, 4-2 over the Cardinals.
The Cubs are in the third wild-card position, holding a four-game lead over the Padres, with the Marlins one back, the Reds 1½ back and the Giants 3½ back. It is in their favor that they hold the tiebreaker with the Marlins and will hold it with the Reds and Giants if it comes down to that. And the remaining schedules for the teams firmly in contention are generally not much more difficult.
The Padres put themselves in position to score more, getting a runner in scoring position in each of the first five innings.
