Map: More than 160 confirmed monkeypox cases have been reported this month in countries where the virus normally doesn’t occur.

Until recently, the largest outbreak in the Western Hemisphere was in 2003, when pet prairie dogs infected 47 people in the U.S.

“What this really marks is the emergence of the most important poxvirus since the eradication of smallpox now in the Western Hemisphere,” said Anne Rimoin, an epidemiology professor at UCLA Fielding School of Public Health. “Of course, we worry if we start to see additional spread of this virus and then it becomes established in the human population.”

Many of the people who’ve gotten monkeypox in the current outbreak have no history of recent travel to Africa or known exposure to an infected person. Cases have largely been identified among young men who have sex with men, leading experts to believe that the disease is being spread through skin-to-skin contact, perhaps from exposure to rashes and lesions during sexual activity,Monkeypox is most commonly found in the Democratic Republic of the Congo and Nigeria, where the virus is endemic.

New York judge approves congressional map, throwing Democrats into disarrayNew York judge approves congressional map, throwing Democrats into disarrayA New York judge approved a new congressional map that pits two veteran Democratic incumbents against one another and boosts Republican odds of capturing more seats in November's midterm elections, further endangering Democrats' fragile U.S. House majority. Justice Patrick McAllister, a judge in rural Steuben County, signed off on the map just before midnight on Friday, weeks after New York's top court ruled that the redistricting plan passed by the Democratic-controlled legislature was unconstitutionally manipulated to benefit the party. The Democratic map would likely have given the party control of 22 of the state's 26 congressional seats this fall, serving to counterbalance similarly partisan maps passed in Republican-dominated states such as Florida, Georgia and Texas.
