While Paris sleeps ahead of the final day of these Games, let’s take a look at Saturday’s highlights.Where next for the Olympics after this year’s race is run? Well, the obvious answer is Los Angeles in 2028 – but the more abstract reply is “autumn”. Potentially. IOC bosssays climate change may force a shift in dates for future Games held in the northern hemisphere.
In his final press conference in Paris, Bach noted that hotter summers had already forced changes to Olympic scheduling, with the Tokyo marathon shifted to the cooler climate city of Sapporo and the Paris marathons given an early morning start time. “If climate change is continuing in the way the experts are forecasting then it will be very difficult to organise the Olympic Games in summer, in August,” Bach said. The finish line is in sight, the referee is about to blow for full-time and the, erm, b-boy and b-girl beats have been switched off. Yes, it’s the final day of the Olympics, with just a handful of events still to come before tonight’s closing ceremony in Paris.
Amid the glory and history, there was also – without naming names – controversy and hilarity. And there’s still a chance of more to come. Can Australia add to their record of tally of gold medals in the final few hours? Or will Japan pip them to a podium spot on the overall medal table? Watch this space.
