Four years, four thrilling finishes. Is the Golden Eagle quickly elevating itself as a super race because it is such an even contest?

Is it hundreds of years of history and immortality? The very best horses and jockeys in the world competing in it regularly? One that brings the crowds? Or is it just piles of cash and the mystery that comes with it?But there’s one factor that counts in the Golden Eagle’s favour in its very short history: every renewal has had a thrilling finish.

Golden Eagle winners : Kolding for Glen Boss in 2019, Colette for Koby Jennings in 2020, I Wish I Win under Luke Nolen in 2022 and I’m Thunderstruck for Hugh Bowman in 2021.Colette drove to victory in a head-bobbing finish with Icebath in the mud of 2020. The official margin was declared at 0.1 of a length.Advertisement

Maybe the fact that the Golden Eagle is restricted to four-year-olds, when horses are generally considered to be in their prime and fully mature, is the reason behind the tight finishes. “I was pretty certain I’d won the race,” Jennings said. “I didn’t officially know until I had come back around. The big board at most tracks, you stick your neck out a bit further to see it. As soon as I saw my number up, it was just excitement and relief. It was everything.”On that day, Colette wheeled into the middle of a rain-affected track to find the fresher ground as Icebath tried to weave a passage through the ruck. It might have proved the difference.
