Several MPs from “key seats” raised concerns about winning funds for local sporting groups with Liberal Party Federal Director Andrew Hirst during a meeting in parliament months before last year’s federal election, Sky News Political Editor Andrew Clennell says.

His remarks come after Agriculture Minister Bridget McKenzie – who was formerly the sports minister – rejected calls to resign after it was revealed she used a $100 million grants program to hand cash to sporting groups and clubs in marginal seats before the May election. Mr Clennell said the MPs, who were from marginal seats, were also concerned about delays in processing. “One of the MPs involved told me there was concerns with the Nationals administering funds, that perhaps the Liberals would not get all the money they wanted from the fund.” “I’m told Mr Hirst told MPs he would get onto it,” Mr Clennell said. “The prime minister’s office has told my they never had any discussions with Mr Hirst concerning this so it’s unclear what action Mr Hirst did take.” Image: News Corp Australia
