Progressive Democratic presidential hopeful Marianne Williamson is reportedly struggling to bring in donations for her presidential campaign, according to audio from a Zoom call with campaign volunteers leaked on Thursday.
Williamson warned volunteers that her campaign was low on cash, some of which she provided herself, and could not afford to keep the campaign afloat at its current rate.“I have put my own money in, and I don’t have the money to continue putting it in at the level I have,” Williamson said in the call, which was obtained by Politico. “Cause remember, I’m not making a living while I’m doing this.”
The two-hour conversation with her staff focused on the financial strains of her current predicament, part of which she claimed was because of her political opponents' concerted efforts to sabotage her campaign. She also faulted the press's alleged obsession with the inner workings of her staff, which has had a high turnover. Williamson is on her third campaign manager since announcing her candidacy, and she recently lost six staffers in one week.
Williamson said the"negative press" has made her"radioactive" to some former friends and possible donors, who are supporting President Joe Biden or fellow challenger Robert F. Kennedy Jr. instead. When asked if she could turn to friends like Oprah Winfrey, she replied that Winfrey would tell her if she was interested in donating. But the bestselling author did admit that she reached out to former roommate and actress Laura Dern but did not hear back.
Williamson reportedly claimed that people were"throwing money" at Kennedy, who has brought in $6 million since announcing his campaign in April. Both are considered long-shot candidates who are drastically trailing Biden for the nomination. RFK Jr. is polling at 19% of the vote, with Williamson remaining in the single digits. The presidential hopeful added that she raised $20,000 from a fundraiser in Chicago, but her Hollywood fundraiser has yet to bring in any significant donations.
