SAN FELIPE, México (AP) — La Marina Armada de México señaló el miércoles que planea expandir la zona en la que coloca bloques de hormigón en el lecho marino con ganchos de acero en la parte superior para atrapar las redes agalleras que causan la muerte de la vaquita marina.

La Marina comenzó a arrojar los bosques de concreto el año pasado en el Golfo de California, con la esperanza de que puedan ayudar a salvar al mamífero marino más amenazado del mundo.

La medida debía desalentar a los pescadores ilegales de arriesgar su costoso equipo en la “zona de tolerancia cero”, un cuadrilátero considerado el último bastión para las vaquitas. El área lleva ese nombre debido a que es el lugar en el que se colocan los bloques, donde se llevan a cabo las labores de patrullaje más intensas, y donde se supone que no debería haber ningún tipo de pesca, aunque aún ocurre.

Encontraron que la mayoría de los 16 avistamientos —algunos de los cuales podrían ser del mismo ejemplar— ocurrieron en la periferia y, en algunos casos, fuera de los límites de la zona de “tolerancia cero”, que se supone debería ser el lugar más seguro para los animales. “Una vez que se haya consensuado con la comunidad pesquera, se colocarán 152 nuevas estructuras en la Zona Franca, frente a la zona de Tolerancia Cero, donde se ha registrado la presencia de partículas tanto por medios visuales como por dirección acústica”, señaló el contralmirante Marco Peyrot Solís, comandante de la Marina en la región.
