Dallas Mavericks governor Mark Cuban recently joined The Pat Bev Podcast with Rone to discuss Kyrie Irving, Luka Doncic and owning a professional basketball...

I’ve traded guys because they smoked too much.

Teams get their own culture and if you got some young dudes on there that are just figuring out, smoke some but don’t know what the team culture is, what NBA culture is, and you got one dude that’s just, you walk down the hall in the hotel and you know he’s on that floor and there’s no doubt about it, all of the sudden these other kids start picking up on it. You see them coming out of their room, you see them a little bit red-eyed coming to practice all a sudden.

“Everybody smokes, right? It’s not about that. But there’s smoking, there’s how powerful the you’re doing is and then there’s how much you do. If you pass that level and there’s a chance you might drag somebody with you, you gotta look at the bigger picture. That’s just not the culture.”“Yeah, that’s tough. Hiring a coach is the hardest part about owning a professional sports team. It’s not even close. Because there are no dumb coaches.

“Trades are hard. I mean, I’ve cried when I traded somebody. Guys who are really close to me. A trade is an admission that you need something or you did something wrong. When a team is grooving, you’re not going to make a trade. But when it’s not, every guy knows and everyone is looking around, but it doesn’t mean you don’t feel as good about the guy and his family. Guys who just had a kid. I don’t care about the weather, but I care about their families and care about them.
