Former Rep. Gabrielle Giffords introduced her husband, Sen. Mark Kelly, ahead of former President Barack Obama's remarks in Phoenix.
Running for office was always Giffords’ job, Kelly said, joking about whether she would have become an astronaut if Kelly had been the one injured.
The rally, of which Obama was the main attraction, brought out about 1,000 supporters to a packed gym at Cesar Chavez High School in Phoenix's Laveen area to hear Democrats up and down the ballot. Polls and analysts are projecting a tight race between Kelly and Republican challenger Blake Masters, a race that could help determine which party controls the U.S. Senate.
