Western Australian Premier Mark McGowan has announced he will step down only two years into his second term.
Mr McGowan entered WA Parliament for the seat of Rockingham in 1996 and quickly shot up the ranks in the Gallop and Carpenter governments.
He was elected the state’s opposition leader in 2012 and returned Labor to government in 2017 following almost a decade in the political wilderness. The 55-year-old was known for his extremely tough stance on COVID-19, keeping the state locked up from the rest of the country at the height of the pandemic.His hard-line approach earned him a landslide victory in the 2021 election, winning 53 out of 59 seats and almost wiping out the Liberal Party.
Mr McGowan’s popularity was also seen as a key factor in Anthony Albanese’s successful 2022 federal election campaign. The then-federal opposition leader and his Labor colleagues launched their campaign in Perth and then went on to claim four seats off the Coalition in WA which delivered the party a narrow majority.
