Long Beach’s Aquarium of the Pacific is celebrating its 25th anniversary this year — and to mark the occasion, the facility will open a new gallery featuring native wildlife this July.
The other will be based on the Eureka oil rig — which sits in federal water about eight miles from Long Beach’s coast and is the deepest rig in Southern California currently accessible to divers — to exhibit how the now-abandoned well has come to serve as an artificial reef for many wildlife species in the Pacific Ocean.

Other creatures — including the California two-spot octopus — will stay in separate “focus tanks,” which weigh in at around 300 gallons, to ensure the public is able to catch a glimpse of the aquarium’s more elusive residents. The gallery is one of many anniversary celebrations planned for the aquarium through December. The top ten winners from the aquarium’s “connecting to nature”— which ended in April — will be featured in a photo gallery on the facility’s second floor; and a new short film about the aquarium’s conservation efforts will be played at the Aquarium Great Hall daily.
