China is not going anywhere and its economic success is connected to Australia’s own, Deputy Prime Minister Richard Marles says.
Defence Minister Richard Marles is hoping there will be scope to have a conversation with his Chinese counterpart, having been introduced to General Wei Fenghe at an international gathering in Singapore.
He said his government has been very clear it wants to go about its international relations in a way that is “sober, professional and based on respect” which is important during complex times. But he said Australia won’t shy way from articulating issues that are in its national interest, making sure that the global rules based order is upheld.
He said Russia’s invasion of Ukraine had shown economic interdependence was not enough to dissuade conflict between nations. The communist superpower’s militarisation of the South China Sea was intended to “deny the legitimacy” of their neighbour’s claims of the waterway. “Australia’s investments in defence capability are a necessary and prudent response to the military buildup we see taking place in the Indo-Pacific,” Mr Marles said.
