Deputy Prime Minister Richard Marles has rejected suggestions the government is divided over soaring energy prices after the Treasurer seemingly backflipped on ruling out a cost of living cash splash.
Both the Treasurer and Prime Minister Anthony Albanese have rejected the benefits of a cash splash to alleviate energy price stress during their respective budget sells this week.
“That would be unlikely, but we don't want to rule it out. Because if this situation continues to deteriorate over time, you want to have all of the options,” Dr Chalmers said on Thursday night. The Deputy Prime Minister quickly clarified the government’s original position on Friday morning and rejected suggestions the government was not on the “same page” in terms of energy prices.“Part of that is about making sure we’re not adding to inflationary pressure but we will be working with the companies in the sector to try and do everything we can to make sure that there is supply so we can have a downward pressure on gas prices.
However, soaring global prices due to the war in Ukraine has seen producers jack up domestic costs, putting massive pressure on struggling households, as unions warned almost a million manufacturing jobs could be lost.
