The Deputy Prime Minister has taken a swipe at the previous government as Foreign Minister Penny Wong expects to meet her Chinese counterpart for the second time since the election.

Foreign Minister Penny Wong confirmed on Wednesday arrangements were being “finalised” for an engagement with Minister Wang Yi while in New York for the United Nations General Assembly.

Following on from the likely foreign ministers meeting, the Deputy Prime Minister and Defence Minister said Australia was focused on mending ties as he took a swipe at the former Coalition government while in Canberra on Wednesday. China requested Australia make further steps to improve the relationship, while taking a veiled swipe at Canberra’s close ties with the United States.

“We always advocate very strongly in respect of our national interest particularly when that differs from other countries and that includes China,” he said.
