The Big Lebowski is a cult classic movie with an all-star cast, but it was almost even bigger, as the Coen brothers wanted to cast Marlon Brando. The 1998 crime caper follows Jeff Lebowski , also known as The Dude, who gets entangled in a kidnapping when he is mistaken for the millionaire philanthropist Jeffrey Lebowski . The Dude has no choice but to help the "big" Lebowski find his kidnapped wife, even though the man sees him as nothing more than a lowlife stoner.

The "big" Lebowski thinks he has the moral high ground because he's a philanthropist and was once featured in Time magazine, but it's revealed that that couldn't be farther from the truth — he's exactly what he's accusing The Dude of being.
Brando Wasn't The Only Godfather Actor Considered For The Role While it's hard to imagine any actor other than David Huddleston playing The Big Lebowski's titular role, as his loud and commanding voice perfectly captures the unexpected energy the character has, Marlon Brando would have been just as great. But he wasn't the only The Godfather actor who was considered for the part.
Other Actors In The Mix For The Title Character While Marlon Brando's performance in The Godfather is iconic, the Coen brothers looked beyond just actors in the seminal 1972 mob movie for the part of Jeffrey Lebowski. The filmmaking duo turned to other seasoned actors with a filmography full of classic '70s movies, such as Anthony Hopkins and Gene Hackman. Incidentally, Hackman is famous for a non-Godfather Coppola-directed movie, The Conversation.
