Don Cheadle debuted as Colonel James "Rhodey" Rhodes in Iron Man 2, taking over the role from Terrence Howard, and after acting as a staple of the MCU's Iron Man stories since the beginning, he is finally set to receive his own solo project in Armor Wars.
Armor Wars will mark War Machine's first solo project, as despite having increased roles in Captain America: Civil War, Infinity War, and Secret Invasion, he is one of the MCU's most underdeveloped characters. Armor Wars is expected to see Rhodey suit up as War Machine for the first time since Endgame, setting out to recover stolen Stark tech in the wake of his best friend's sacrifice.
Armor Wars Can Pay Off War Machine's Endgame Suit Introduction Avengers: Endgame saw the majority of the MCU's superheroes get major costume upgrades, and War Machine was no exception. Throughout most of Endgame, Rhodey sported a slimline suit of armor that enabled ease of movement during the Avengers' Time Heist, but for the film's epic final battle against Thanos' army, Rhodey acquired a bulkier, more advanced, battle-ready armor.
Other MCU Plotlines Armor Wars Can Wrap Up As well as Armor Wars potentially paying off the appearance of War Machine's new armor in Endgame, the upcoming film can also wrap up several other loose ends from previous Iron Man projects in the MCU. Although nothing has yet been confirmed by Marvel Studios, and little is known about Armor Wars' storyline, it's possible that the film will be acting as a continuation of the MCU's Iron Man franchise.
Armor Wars could also feature the return of White Vision, Paul Bettany's rebuilt Synthezoid who debuted in WandaVision. This would make sense as Vision was originally, at least partly, Tony Stark's creation. Given Rhodey's recent political role in the MCU, it's possible that Emily VanCamp could return as Sharon Carter, explaining her Power Broker reveal from The Falcon and the Winter Soldier.
