In a statement to Postmedia on Wednesday, UBC said it was an “incredibly complicated issue and one that we know many of our community members have strong feelings about. … On Dec. 12, the Provost and President met with the President’s Advisory Committee on Indigenous Affairs for an initial conversation.
“We also have to deal with union rules, we also have to deal employment law, so these are very time-consuming conversations,” said TallBear. She is perhaps best known in B.C. as the province’s representative for children and youth from 2006 to 2016, and for a 2020 report on systemic racism against Indigenous people in the province’s health care system.
