Mary Knoblauch, a writer and editor at Chicago newspapers, including the Tribune, died of respiratory failure on April 26. She was 80.

Mary Knoblauch was a writer and editor at Chicago newspapers including the Tribune, where she helped develop new features sections, oversaw the Sunday magazine and was a writing coach for many years.

In 1969, the American was transformed into a tabloid newspaper called Chicago Today. Knoblauch was the paper’s film critic, attending screenings with two young and soon-to-be star critics, the Tribune’s Gene Siskel and Roger Ebert of the Chicago Sun-Times. Emmy Award-winning comedy writer Bruce Vilanch, a former feature reporter for the Tribune, worked alongside Knoblauch at Chicago Today and recalled that her “true love” was movies.

Dishon’s mission, which Knoblauch helped carry out, was to reinvigorate certain features sections that were seen as stodgy and out of date. That meant replacing features like recipes in the Tempo section with profiles and other well-researched and well-reported stories.
