Ready to expand: Kenny Graham and Jake Smyth are ready to move into the Entertainment Quarter at Moore Park.The site has been home to music ventures The Forum, Hi-Fi and Max Watt’s over the past 10 years, but its lease was up for renewal when Mary’s founders Jake Smyth and Kenny Graham started conversations with Entertainment Quarter co-chief executive Michael Hodgson.
“We’re looking for the room to be a bit more chameleon-esque... It’s a black box, but by using lighting and moving rigging, putting stages in the middle of the room, we can transform the space.
“The lockout laws and COVID-19 have severely impacted a once flourishing and vibrant nightlife, and I wasn’t going to let yet another music venue fall by the wayside, not on my watch.” But he was optimistic that it was bringing like-minded people together, which could lead to precinct-wide projects such as food festivals or larger music festivals in the future.“It feels like everyone is ready to make a positive change,” he said. “Everything’s there for the taking, with the backing of governments in terms of revitalising nightlife and post-COVID. It’s in its infancy but it’s a special time. These times don’t come along a lot.
