A picturesque swimming spot on an island popular near Brisbane could be home to a crocodile after a “credible” sighting.

The saltwater crocodile was reportedly spotted at Myora Springs on North Stradbroke Island on Wednesday morning, the state environment department reported.Watch the latest news and stream for free on“Queensland Parks and Wildlife Service is investigating a credible saltwater crocodile sighting at Myora Springs, North Stradbroke Island within the Moreton Bay Marine Park,” the authority said in an alert.

“QPWS is directing park users to stay out of the area while Rangers investigate the sighting as crocodiles are easily spooked.No photographic proof of the sighting has been provided and the department is investigating.Queensland’s “crocodile country” is generally considered to be only as far south as the Wide Bay area, with North Stradbroke Island — located off Redland Bay — approximately 500km further south of that region.

Myora Springs is described as a “picturesque piece of natural beauty” on tourism website VisitBrisbane, with a site a popular location for Instagram photos.A map depicting Queensland‘s general “croc country”.“Visitors and residents on Minjerribah are urged to stay away from Myora Springs for safety reasons, and to allow rangers to complete their investigation,” the department said.Crocodile warning signs will be installed at boat ramps while the investigation is underway.
