Rodriguez, who took the post of top cop at the end of 2020, recalls an area made up of crumbling buildings and graffiti-covered walls. Crime was rampant as well — the city once known asThere’s work yet to be done, he acknowledged, knowing that parts of the city still experience crime and blight. But Rodriguez said he hopes the “Camden Invincible” mural will remind residents and visitors traveling along the thoroughfare that the city has made significant progress in the past few decades.
“Now we can debate on whether Walt Whitman was talking about Camden or New York when he was referring to a city invincible. But regardless of where one stands on the issue, we can now proclaim that this mural is crystal clear on which cityA similar mural at the same location previously read, “City Invincible” before the new one was completed recently as part of a larger citywide project.
The sixth, “Camden Invincible,” is rife with details. The letter “M” features the faces of children in crowns, “N” displays Whitman himself peering on and another “N” is coated with phrases about the latest social justice movement happening across the country. A few examples: “I can’t breathe,” “We matter” and “We the people?”
