Yet another major winter storm is set to sweep through a large swath of the U.S. beginning Tuesday night, leading to weather alerts stretching from western New Mexico to Vermont as millions brace for potentially heavy snow and freezing rain.“Frigid arctic air” plunging into the U.S. as a slow-moving low-pressure system moves across the country will likely lead to a long-term winter storm threat,to the National Weather Service, with hazardous weather continuing across much of the central U.S.
The highest snow totals east of the Rocky Mountains, which could get 2 feet at higher elevations, are expected across portions of the Midwest, with a corridor from central Illinois eastward across northern Indiana into northwestern Ohio potentially getting over a foot of snow. Freezing rain could also produce “heavy ice accumulation” exceeding a quarter of an inch stretching from central Texas northeastward to northern Indiana, potentially bringing a double threat of heavy snow and ice across the lower Midwest.
The freezing rain could cause major travel disruptions on roadways and lead to power outages in areas with the greatest accumulation. Overall, the storm is forecast to impact a roughly 2,000-mile stretch across the U.S. from New Mexico to New England, but major impacts are expected to be largely limited to the lower Midwest.“Locations impacted by snow and/or ice are expected to have temperatures remain below freezing, and well below average, for at least a couple days after the wintry precipitation ends,” the National Weather Service said.on record, much of the U.S.
