About one in five breastfeeding mothers suffer from mastitis, but experts say not enough research exists on treatment for this common condition.

Mastitis affects about one in five breastfeeding mothers and is the inflammation of breast tissue commonly caused by a blocked milk duct.Researchers at Curtain University and Monash Rural Health are recruiting Melbourne women for a trial to see if ultrasound therapy, a common treatment, relieves the condition.

Ms Daniel had developed an abscess in her breast and was in hospital on an IV for antibiotics and pain relief for six days, followed by three months of having needles inserted into her breast to drain the blockages."Over three months, I had nine drainages … so it took quite a lot out of me."Ms Daniel worked in healthcare alongside midwives and obstetricians.

"I think it would be really valuable to be something that maybe people are told about at birth, probably, or even beforehand."About one in five lactating mothers are affected by mastitis, according to the Australian Breastfeeding Association, most likely during the first few months after giving birth.

Ms Heron said it was the most common treatment used by Australian physiotherapists for ICLB, but its application could vary in the intensity at which the soundwaves are delivered and the number of treatments given to patients."Funding is one side of it but also women with mastitis and these conditions are often acutely unwell and they're caring for a little baby, if not other children at home as well, so it's hard to recruit women and conduct research in this area.

"There's a lot of research out there about the huge benefits of breastfeeding, both for the breastfeeding parent … but also for the child. The lack of research about the effectiveness of ultrasound therapy is stopping the Australian Breastfeeding Association from making a decision on whether to recommend it as a treatment for mastitis.

The Australian Physiotherapy Association said it looked forward to seeing the results of the ultrasound trial.
