Planned births are returning to one of Australia's most remote towns for the first time in a quarter of a century, saving women in the region an exhausting 2,000 kilometre-round trip to hospital.
Birthing services will re-open at Weipa Hospital next month after a 25-year absence of maternity care in the remote Cape York town.
Since 1999, women from the Cape York Peninsula have travelled hundreds of kilometres from family and community support to give birth in Cairns and Townsville.But birthing services will resume at the Weipa Hospital from May 22 after the recent appointment of obstetrics head Dr John Hall and midwifery director Michelle O'Connor to Weipa Integrated Health Service.
