Sam Kerr is one of the world’s most marketable athletes and has helped the Matildas sell more jerseys before the Women’s World Cup than the Socceroos sold during or since the men’s tournament, Nike says.

with male players, the Nike boss said the marketing potential of the women’s team had passed the men’s, and Kerr was arguably on the cusp of becoming Australia’s biggest sport star of either gender.

The Matildas jerseys are made of recycled polyester with a marbled pattern which draws on the golden wattle for their home strip. Nike sells them for $115 in adults sizes and $100 for children. Kids tops are far outselling adult kits, Mr Reade said. Mr Reade said Nike had been analysing the potential upside and potential downside of the Matildas’ performance, with three games guaranteed in the group stage and potential finals to follow.
