There were 49,461 fans packed into Brisbane Stadium on Saturday night and after 120 minutes of intense and physical football the sides still could not be split.

Picture: Justin Setterfield/Getty ImagesA penalty shoot-out was needed and Australia shot out to an early lead thanks to Mackenzie Arnold saving Selma Bacha's opening shot before Caitlin Foord buried Australia's first.Australia's Steph Catley stepped up looking to hold onto the lead but a diving save from Solene Durand put the teams on level terms again.
Australia's superstar, Sam Kerr was third to shoot and the captain nailed her shot to the right of the French shot-stopper.Mary Fowler was fourth for the Matildas and after a stunning game she scored hers with a scorching shot to the left.Arnold was the next to shoot and the Matildas' goalkeeper agonisingly hit the post sending it to sudden death.Matildas veteran Katrina Gorry got her chance to shoot and she scored despite the French keeper getting a strong hand to it.
Tameka Yallop had been subbed on in the dying stages of extra time and she sent Durand the wrong way extending the shoot-out.Ellie Carpenter had her chance to extend the shoot-out and she was perfect scoring off the left post.
