Matildas stalwart Lydia Williams has announced she will retire from international football after the Paris Olympics. It will bring an end to one of the longest and greatest careers in Australian football with Williams making her Matildas debut way back in 2005. The 35-year-old created history at last year’s Women’s World Cup when she and teammate Clare Polkinghorne became the first Australians — man or woman — to earn selection to five World Cups.
After earning her first call-up to the national team at age 15, she went on to make a staggering 103 appearances throughout a brilliant career. As well as going to five World Cups, Williams also played in three Asian Cups and was a member of the 2010-winning squad. She enjoyed a decorated career in the W-League, as well as playing in the USA, England and France.
