Hayley Raso has marked her return to the Matildas with a clinical solo goal only six months after breaking her back to kick off the Ante Milicic era with a 2-0 win over New Zealand in the Cup of Nations.
The then 23-year-old broke three vertebrae in 2018 when she was felled in a sickening collision with an opposition keeper while playing for Portland in National Women’s Soccer League in the US. The attacker’s legs went completely numb and she even questioned whether she would be able to walk again as she underwent an arduous rehabilitation period, but it couldn’t have been a more different picture on Thursday night when she marked her return to the national team with a classy individual effort late in the second half.
Collecting the ball in the final third Raso ran at goal, drawing in her defender before shifting on to her right and drilling a inch-perfect effort across Erin Nayler and into the bottom corner in the 75th minute."It was overwhelming for me, I just wanted to come out and keep getting minutes under my belt and to score was so exciting," she told Fox Sports.
