Matt Goss has, of late, become more famous for his glorious eccentricity and left-field musings than he ever was for being a teen idol and turning Grolsch bottle tops into a style accessory. A conversation with thecontestant swerves from high intensity to light relief and back again without him taking a breath. Veering from his sister’s death in a car accident to how he used to fancy his mum’s mate, Rita, and how profoundly he has been betrayed in life and how it has hurt him to the core.
He leaps on the notion of being a national treasure. “I hear these words said about me and I feel honoured. I’m an emotional fool, really. I want to be one of this country’s true optimists and I want to be one of this country’s gentlemen.”Goss’s soapbox subject is masculinity. “I think men have been a bit battered of late. I love being a man, I love having the swagger that I have, I love having testosterone. I’ve been a boxer for 20-plus years but I also love being a gentleman.
“The fellas that come to my show are decked out in suits and tuxedos and the women bring it in their cocktail dresses. The one thing that gets me when I’ve not felt like going on stage is thinking about the ladies and gentlemen getting ready; their fragrance, their heels. I’m their night out. That still rocks my world. You don’t want to see my show and be like ‘Oh he came on in a T-shirt and read poetry.’ I’m going to smash it and, to do that, I need to be extravagant.
