The NSW budget’s focus on childcare and the structure of a package to boost the flow of childcare centres will boost the economy.

Working women and business groups have praised the Perrottet government’s $10 billion investment in childcare as a move that could ease a skills shortage and trigger vast improvements in productivity.

While the budget plan has been criticised for steep spending and borrowing in the lead-up to an election, the focus on childcare and the structure of the spending has been regarded as an effective initiative which will boost the economy. Measures designed to encourage working mothers and parents back into the workforce include grants to help expand or build new centres in so-called “childcare deserts”, as well as cash incentives for centres that offer more affordable rates for parents facing challenges sending kids to childcare, such as poorer parents, single mothers and regional families.
