The Victorian Liberal Party could have a new leader as early as tomorrow, with former leader Matthew Guy to challenge for the top job when parliament resumes this week.
Victorian Liberal MPs Matthew Guy and Tim Smith have resigned from the Shadow Cabinet ahead of a likely challenge to the leadership of Michael O'Brien.Senior party sources say Mr Guy has the support to topple Mr O'BrienThe spill will be the second attempt in six months to oust current leader Michael O'Brien, who has faced criticism for failing to land a blow on the Premier Daniel Andrews throughout the pandemic.
A virtual party room meeting is set to be held online at 7:45am tomorrow in line with COVID-safe protocols, but Mr O'Brien's office said he was happy to hold the meeting in person and they were trying to find a safe way to do that. Another senior party source who has previously backed Mr O'Brien said the party would not have got to this point unless Mr Guy had the support.
Former Victorian shadow attorney-general John Pesutto said he suspected Mr Guy had the numbers to topple Mr O'Brien.
