When Matthew Roberts opened up about his job to his financial provider upon request, he was immediately cut off from the business banking service he had been using “drama free” for years. The gay sex worker and advocate for sex workers’ rights in Victoria, where sex work is now decriminalised, was shocked by the bank’s decision, in a move he labelled “de-banking”. When he was knocked back from using the service again a year later, in 2022, he decided to fight it in court.

Senior associate at the firm, Bridie Murphy, said: “The denial of financial services, often referred to as ‘de-banking’, has been a significant problem for sex workers. “In an increasingly cashless economy, de-banking has serious implications for anyone who runs their own business, including sex workers.” Roberts said: “I know for a fact how many people in the sex work industry are affected every single day. We are talking about thousands and thousands of victims here.
