How many fans realize that of the four 7-foot centers who were on Dallas’ roster to start the season, three have been shed? And that the lone holdover, 7-4 Boban Marjanovic, has appeared in only 17 games and has seen only 168 seconds of court time since Dec. 29?, it acquired needed playmaking in Spencer Dinwiddie and shooting in Davis Bertans. Simultaneously, the franchise went all-in on playing smaller lineups the rest of the season.
Five weeks and many key games remain in the regular season, but a Dallas-Utah first-round series certainly looms possible if not likely. When Dallas traded Porzingis, there was understandable concern among fans about jettisoning the team’s best rim-protector. Porzingis had the highest blocked-shots average on the team. Now the Mavericks’ leading shot-blockers by average are 6-10 Maxi Kleber and 6-7 Dorian Finney-Smith and Luka Doncic .
That’s a question I posed to Warriors coach Steve Kerr, whose team last week lost to Dallas twice in a span of four days.
