Affiliation and donations to the ALP have been suspended, administrators forced in, and now Labor is using the bad stench around the CFMEU as a political weapon against the Greens.
When Tony Abbott took to the stage of an anti-carbon tax rally outside Parliament House back in 2011, the imagery was appalling and the condemnation swift.
"The Greens throw their lot in with thuggery," said Deputy Prime Minister Richard Marles. Tanya Plibersek, Katy Gallagher, Bill Shorten and Murray Watt all joined a concerted effort to link the Greens to the worst elements of the CFMEU and a failure to take seriously the widespread allegations of "violence, intimidation and misogyny" in the union.
Tony Abbott said similar after the backlash he copped 13 years ago. Abbott insisted he didn't see all the offensive signs, he offered no apology, and said the real issue of the carbon tax was being ignored. Right now, the Albanese government is confident it can see off any legal challenge and use the events of this week to tie the Greens, and Max Chandler-Mather in particular, to "thugs" in the CFMEU.
