Australian tennis player Max Purcell has been provisionally suspended for a doping violation after unknowingly receiving an IV infusion of vitamins above the allowable limit. His US Open-winning partner Jordan Thompson expressed outrage at the suspension, calling it a 'stitch-up' and a 'joke'.
Australia’s two-time doubles grand-slam winner Max Purcell has been provisionally suspended over an alleged violation of tennis’s anti-doping program. The International Tennis Integrity Agency (ITIA) announced on Monday that Purcell had voluntarily accepted the suspension, after admitting to a breach relating to a prohibited method. Purcell, the world No.
12 doubles player, elected to accept the provisional suspension earlier this month, ruling him out of playing or coaching at any ATP and ITF events, including the four majors. In a statement posted on social media, Purcell claimed he had “unknowingly received an IV infusion of vitamins above the allowable limit of 100ml”. The Sydney-born player also said he had told the medical clinic that the infusion needed to be below 100ml since he was a professional athlete, only to later see medical records that showed he had been given more than that level. The news prompted Purcell’s US Open-winning partner Jordan Thompson to hit out ahead of the Brisbane International. “It’s a stitch-up. I mean, the guy took too much saltwater in an IV bag in Bali, I think. He was unwell. That’s why he went there. He went to the hospital,” Thompson said. “Yeah, I have no good words for it. It is a joke. I mean, guys are testing positive, performance enhancers, he’s gone out and taken too much saltwater, they’ve suspended him. Take of that what you will. Anyone looking at it goes it’s so unfair. “I don’t know, I don’t know what is going to happen to him. Yeah, I’ve definitely got my strong thoughts on it.” Thompson, who will play Italy’s Mateo Berrettini in the opening singles round at the Brisbane International, will partner fellow Australian Chris O’Connell in the double
