Max Verstappen takes Austrian GP sprint race win.

Max Verstappen is starting to pull away. Red Bull's lead driver already had a substantial lead on both his teammate Max Verstappen and Ferrari lead driver Charles Leclerc before today's sprint race, one that grew with a win in today's sprint qualifying race for tomorrow's Austrian GP.

While Verstappen pulled away from pole for a quiet win, chaos engulfed the rest of the field. Ferrari teammates Leclerc and Carlos Sainz Jr. spent the opening laps battling, arguably battling too closely for teammates in a race worth just eight points for the winner, but Leclerc eventually came out on top and will share the front row with Verstappen tomorrow. Sainz and George Russell will lead row 2.

Sergio Perez will start fifth after falling to 13th on a track limits infraction in Friday's qualifying session. Esteban Ocon, Kevin Magnussen, and Lewis Hamilton complete the eight points-scoring positions, with Hamilton clawing past Mick Schumacher to retake eighth after crashing in Q3 and falling back in the sprint's opening laps.

Notably, Leclerc's Ferrari was eventually able to keep pace with Verstappen after the Ferraris stopped battling. He will now have a second chance at a standing start on the front row with Verstappen with far more points on the line. While Leclerc cannot pass Verstappen tomorrow, he can make a dent in his championship lead at the halfway mark of the season.
