Another grand prix, another Max Verstappen win. Because it limits the outright speed that is Red Bull’s key strength, some thought Monaco offered the best chance of an upset so far this season. But that was not the case.

After, the GP’s main drama didn’t arrive until 50 laps in, when a long-awaited rainstorm arrived, sending drivers into the pits to take on the intermediate tires designed to better grip the wet track.

The rain lasted just long enough to shake up the order as drivers including Carlos Sainz, Lance Stroll, Kevin Magnussen and Logan Sargeant slid out. But the chaos didn’t touch the top of the grid, where Verstappen had built a healthy lead over Alonso and was able to pit for intermediate tires without giving up first. Alonso meanwhile pitted twice in a row, taking on new mediums before deciding on the intermediates instead.

Because it limits the outright speed that is Red Bull’s key strength, Monaco offered the best chance of an upset so far this season. But not even the rain could take Verstappen off his game — or the top step of the podium.
