Nearly a year after Cleveland voters overwhelmingly approved Issue 24 to strengthen civilian oversight of police, Mayor Justin Bibb on Monday formally nominated his 10 choices to serve on the Community Police Commission.
CLEVELAND, Ohio –
City Council has not yet set a date to vet the nominees, which would happen prior to a confirmation vote. The charter amendment requires members of the new commission to be “broadly representative of the racial, social, economic, and cultural interests of the community, including those of the racial-minority, immigrant/refugee, LGBTQ+, youth, faith, business, and other communities, to reflect the overall demographics of Cleveland residents.
The 13 potential members do appear to represent a wide variety of demographic backgrounds. They include people who are LGBTQ, have a disability, or are an immigrant, as well as one person who was formerly incarcerated and homeless.
