Mayor of London Sadiq Khan calls for SNP to fulfil free school meals pledge

EXCLUSIVE: The London mayor has rolled out a £135m policy for all primary pupils and called on the SNP to do the same.

The Mayor of London has called on Humza Yousaf to “step up” and give all primary pupils free school meals.

He said: “Ministers have to recognise the benefit of ensuring our children receive healthy and nutritious food and the impact that this cost-of-living crisis is having on families and step-up to provide this vital lifeline to all primary schools on a longer-term basis.” “I know from personal experience what a lifeline free school meals can be, but the shame of having to queue up separately for my lunch has stuck with me ever since,. I don’t want anyone to have to face that.”At its party ­conference in November 2020 then SNP deputy leader John ­Swinney announced that his party would extend it to all primary children if elected at the next Scottish Parliament ­elections.

“Every day delayed equals another child in Scotland going needlessly hungry. Above all else, it makes a mockery of the First Minister’s laudable and shared aims to tackle poverty.” Council leader Stephen McCabe insisted the Scottish Government could fulfil its promises within a year if they wanted to.
