A cohort of mayors across Sydney could be elected for just two months because their elections aren’t synced with local government polls delayed due to Sydney’s coronavirus crisis | AngusGthompson

A cohort of mayors across Sydney could be elected for just two months because their elections aren’t synced with local government polls delayed due to Sydney’s coronavirus crisis.

“This is, by all intents and purposes, a two-month mayor who can cause a lot of havoc,” Cr Laxale said. Canterbury-Bankstown mayor Khal Asfour, whose council is also gripped by heightened lockdown measures, said he was dealing with residents struggling to pay bills and find work, and he wanted to be able to execute COVID plans without the possibility of another mayor potentially putting that at risk.Dominic Lorrimer

Asked whether the NSW government would move the mayoral ballots in line with the postponed local government elections, an Office of Local Government spokesperson said mayors elected by their fellow councillors in September 2019 will go to the ballot in September 2021.“The Office of Local Government will issue more detailed guidance on this before September,” the spokesperson said, adding the civic offices of all mayors would expire on election day, December 4.
