Kevin McCarthy has lost another vote to become speaker of the House of Representatives.
and attempting to negotiate with the 20 GOP lawmakers who opposed him, McCarthy lost a fourth vote Wednesday. On Wednesday, the number of defections grew to 21 when Indiana Rep. Victoria Spartz voted"present" on the fourth ballot. With 222 members in his caucus, McCarthy can suffer only four defections and still become speaker.
The other 20 GOP dissenters voted for Florida Rep. Byron Donalds, a second-term congressman who voted for McCarthy twice yesterday but flipped his support to Ohio Rep. Jim Jordan in the third round of voting. Donalds voted for himself on the fourth ballot Wednesday.
