Houston’s ownership was patient with general manager to do what was best in trading...
Houston Texans chairman Cal McNair talks to general manager Nick Caserio during training camp last August. The McNairs trusted Caserio with the power to make the right move on Deshaun Watson. It’s difficult to imagine a worse situation than Nick Caserio inherited when he was hired as the Texans’ general manager on Jan. 7, 2021.
When he was hired by the McNair family — Janice, Hannah and Cal McNair — Caserio thought he could count on the Texans’ franchise quarterback, but Deshaun Watson turned out to be the biggest problem of all. The no-trade clause allowed Watson to determine his next destination, and Caserio sent him to Cleveland with a fifth-round draft choice in 2024. The Texans get three first-round picks — one in each of the next three drafts — and selections in the third and fourth rounds .
Watson’s agent, David Mulugheta, negotiated a five-year deal worth a record-breaking $230 million that’s fully guaranteed against skill and injury. No wonder Watson pivoted back to the Browns.Looking back at what transpired between Watson issuing his trade demand to Friday’s decision, Caserio did a terrific job of handling a delicate situation that could have spiraled out of control.
Of course, McNair didn’t want to pay Watson $10.54 million to be inactive for 17 games in 2021. They wouldn’t have wanted to pay him another $35 million next season to be inactive again for every game unless Caserio thought that was the best course of action.
