A 2025 World Cup or the 2026 Olympics are McDavid's next chance at best-on-best play.
“These are iconic moments, and they only happen in best-on-best tournaments. We’re missing that. We’ve been missing it for a long time. I think everybody is hoping to get that back.”
Part of longing for McDavid is that he’s been denied the chance to play together with Crosby, someone he first met as a 15-year-old. Crosby mentioned during the player tour in Henderson, Nev., an interview that appeared on the “32 Thoughts” podcast, that he’d like to share the ice with McDavid in international play. Crosby said he’d be willing to move to the wing to accommodate that.
“We’re talking about some of the greatest of all time,” McDavid said. “He’s definitely right up there just in terms of what he’s done — individually, winning at every level. He’s done it all, and obviously done it for a long time. He’s done it at a very high level for a long time. Very, very impressive. I have nothing but respect for him and what he’s done.”McDavid has garnered endless comparisons to Crosby as the next Canadian superstar.
“Certainly, and it’s a team game. It’s not like it’s football where the quarterback gets the ball every play, or basketball where you can play 45 minutes and have the ball every possession. It’s a team game, maybe the ultimate team game there is. It takes everybody. It takes a full organization. It takes everybody staying healthy. It takes a little bit of luck, too. There’s lots of things that go into it.
