McDonald’s becomes the latest Western company to pause all operations in Russia after the invasion of Ukraine while Shell has apologised for buying Russian oil.
McDonald’s said it would temporarily close its restaurants in Russia, becoming the latest Western company to pause all operations in the country after it moved troops into Ukraine.
“It’s impossible to predict when we might be able to reopen our restaurants in Russia,” McDonald’s CEO, Chris Kempczinski, said in a note emailed company-wide on Tuesday and posted on the company’s website.
Shell’s decision to abandon Russia comes days after it faced a hail of criticism for buying Russian oil – a transaction that two weeks ago would have been routine - underlining how Moscow’s pariah status is growing even in a market it used to dominate. German sportswear maker Adidas, cosmetics firm Estee Lauder, and Calvin Klein and Tommy Hilfiger owner PVH Corp are among the latest brands to announce the suspension of activities there.
