Kaylee McKeown has won her second Olympic gold after a crushing victory in the 200m backstroke final, while Emily Seebohm has won a sixth Olympic medal. Tokyo2020 Olympics Olympics2020
Australia also picked up third place in the mixed 4x100 medley relay, which keeps Emma McKeon’s goal of winning seven medals at these Games alive.
McKeown’s victory was Australia’s seventh in the pool. The team is now just one behind its highest-ever swimming haul of eight golds at Melbourne in 1956. The seventh win equalled Australia’s mark set in the pool at Athens and surpassed the five golds medals in Sydney. “The 800 was a bonus. This is a much tougher field,” Titmus said on Seven. “We’re all around the same time at the moment, obviously Katie Ledecky’s world record is insane. I knew I had to hurt tonight. I tried to hold on ... I tried to reel her in. Oh it’s good to be finished now. Surely I don’t have to keep training, surely not.
“I feel a bit like wine - it gets better as it ages. I feel like a bit of a fine wine at the moment.”Australia claimed a bronze in the mixed 400m medley relay in the race’s first appearance at the Olympics. Australia was fifth after the backstroke leg from McKeown and fifth when breaststroker Zac Stubblety-Cook touched the wall. Butterfly specialist Matt Temple got Australia into fourth at the 300m mark before McKeon, just moments after her 50m freestyle semi-final win, got Australia onto the podium with a 100m freestyle split of 51.73.
