F1: Lando Norris has surged past Max Verstappen to claim pole position in the Dutch GP, after an eventful qualifying.
Max Verstappen started his home grand prix weekend wondering which of his streaks was set to be broken. He had also never been beaten to pole at his home track . That run has now been ended emphatically by Lando Norris ,Dutch hearts aren’t used to being disappointed at their own grand prix, but they’ll have to be steeled to accept their reigning champion going five races without a victory come the chequered flag on Sunday.Norris didn’t just beat Verstappen to pole position . He dominated him.
There’s no doubting this was a special lap, and that’s especially true when you consider the blustery conditions made it difficult for drivers to lap consistently through the hour. This is Norris’s third pole of the season and fourth of his career. It’ll be his fifth P1 start including his sprint pole in Shanghai earlier this year.First McLaren's British driver Lando Norris poses at the end of the qualifying session at The Circuit Zandvoort, western Netherlands, on August 24, 2024, ahead of the Formula One Dutch Grand Prix. The Formula One Zandvoort Grand Prix race will take place on August 25, 2024.
Passing is extremely difficult around this narrow, undulating circuit. Holding the lead off the line will be critical to victory on Sunday. While Russell was more than half a second off pole, he was only 0.215 seconds slower than Verstappen.Verstappen complained of nervousness with his car, while Russell was clearly hamstrung by Mercedes’s sensitivity to changing track temperature.
He then had his sad afternoon compounded by a three-place penalty that will drop him to 14th on the grid after being found guilty of impeding Sergio Pérez in Q1. In treacherously wet conditions he got too happy with the throttle exiting the banked turn 3. With his right wheels still on the grass, he instantly lost control of his car and spinning into the outside barriers with car-destroying force.Remarkably the chassis was undamaged, but repairs were too extensive to be completed in the three hours between the car returning to pit lane and the start of qualifying.Crashing in FP3 is a cardinal sin given the risk it carries for qualifying.
Again, around a track this short, that’s an eternity — almost 1.2 seconds if it were an average 90-second lap. ZANDVOORT, NETHERLANDS - AUGUST 24: 11th place qualifier Carlos Sainz of Spain and Ferrari walks in the Pitlane during qualifying ahead of the F1 Grand Prix of Netherlands at Circuit Zandvoort on August 24, 2024 in Zandvoort, Netherlands. “Unfortunately I keep repeating myself after quite a few months, but we’ve got a lot of work to do,” Leclerc said. “We’re aware as a team that we have a lot of work to do. We are working flat out to try and close that gap.
